A travel consent letter is needed when a Canadian child under 18 or 19 years of age (depending on which province) is traveling either alone, with relatives, friends or only one of their parents/ guardian. A consent letter may be asked for by immigration authorities in a foreign country or when re-entering Canada. Even though a consent letter is not legally mandatory, it can save a lot of time and frustration throughout the trip. The letter ensures that the child has been given permission to travel from parents, guardians or the other parent or guardian who is not with the child. The information needed to be included on a travel consent form will include both parent/guardian contact information and relation to the child. It will also include information on the child including name, date of birth, nationality, passport information and number. If someone is accompanying the child, it will also contain information on that person, as well as the travel itinerary such as destination and return information. A travel consent letter must be signed by anyone who is a Canadian Citizen and of the age of majority, but it highly recommended that the document be certified by a commissioner of oath, lawyer or notary public. The reason it is recommended to for the travel consent letter to be certified is so that the authenticity of the document will not be questioned from a foreign destination or when the child is returning to Canada.
